Zeus, en colère de tant d'orgueil, envoya un taon piquer Pégase.
Fou de douleur, le cheval désarçonna son cavalier qui tomba dans le vide et mourut en s'écrasant au sol. Pégase acheva alors de monter au ciel et se transforma en constellation.

Son nom vient par ailleurs d'un mot grec signifiant "la source", car Pégase, d'un coup de sabot, aurait fait naître une ou deux sources.
